Lagos Govt Gives Police Officers 3 Months Free Transport on BRT, Train, and Boats

The Lagos State Government has launched a 3-month free transportation scheme for police officers in the state. The initiative was unveiled on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, to recognize the sacrifices of police officers in maintaining peace and security across Lagos. The state government presented 2,000 Cowry Cards to the Nigeria Police Force. Each card gives unlimited complimentary access for 3 months to Lagos’ integrated public transportation system:
– Blue Line and Red Line rail services
– Electric water boats
– Bus Rapid Transit BRT buses
According to ASP Aminat Mayegun, Police PRO, FCID Annex Lagos, the gesture was conceived through the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transportation Logistics. “It’s introduced in recognition of the sacrifices and contributions of police officers to peace and security in Lagos”. The Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said it’s part of the state’s “Police Care Initiative” to improve welfare and strengthen police-public relations. The state government has proposed a 50% fare discount for police officers after the complimentary period ends. The discounted rate will apply to Blue Line, Red Line, electric boats, and BRT. AIG Simeon Akpanudom, who received the cards on behalf of the IGP, thanked Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu for the support. He said affordable transport will reduce financial pressure on officers and serve as a morale booster. CP Fatai Tijani, Commissioner of Police Lagos Command, described the gesture as “unprecedented”. The launch also coincided with the 3rd anniversary of the Lagos Blue Line Rail. 2,000 police officers in Lagos will now commute for free on BRT, train, and boats till December 2026.
