NAFDAC Confirms 48 Deaths Linked to Toxic Herbal Concoction in Ondo

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has confirmed that 48 people have died following the consumption of a toxic herbal concoction in Ondo State. The agency also disclosed that 182 cases of illness have been recorded in connection with the incident, prompting further investigation into the substance responsible for the outbreak. The development has raised fresh concerns over the dangers associated with unregulated herbal preparations and other products whose ingredients and production processes have not been properly verified. NAFDAC said investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and determine the source and composition of the toxic substance. Authorities are also taking measures to prevent further exposure among residents in affected communities. The incident has renewed calls for members of the public to exercise caution when consuming herbal preparations, particularly products sold without proper regulatory approval or clear information about their ingredients. Health officials are expected to continue monitoring the situation as investigations progress. The number of deaths has also heightened concerns about the need for stronger enforcement against unsafe products and greater public awareness of the risks associated with consuming unverified herbal mixtures. NAFDAC’s confirmation comes as affected families and communities continue to deal with the consequences of the incident.
