Troops Rescue 41 Travellers After Kidnap Attempt in Zamfara

Nigerian troops have rescued 41 travellers after armed men allegedly attempted to abduct them in Zamfara State. The incident occurred in Tsafe Local Government Area after the commercial vehicle conveying the passengers reportedly developed a mechanical fault along a major highway. According to the military, the vehicle was travelling from Senegal towards Kano State when it became stranded. Armed men allegedly took advantage of the situation and attempted to move the passengers away from the vehicle. Troops of Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, were mobilised after receiving intelligence about the incident. The military said the troops engaged the attackers, forcing them to abandon the travellers and flee into nearby farmlands. All 41 travellers were reportedly rescued unharmed. The group comprised 24 men, 10 women and seven children, according to the military. The rescued passengers were subsequently provided with assistance and are expected to be reunited with their families and relevant transit authorities. Troops reportedly remained in the area as efforts continued to secure the highway and pursue the fleeing attackers. The incident highlights the risks faced by motorists and passengers travelling along some highways in the North-West, where armed groups have continued to pose security challenges. Premium Times noted that it could not independently verify the military’s account of the encounter. Authorities have continued to deploy security forces across parts of the North-West in an effort to protect communities and travellers from bandit attacks.
