Domestic airlines operating under the Airline Operators of Nigeria have warned that they could shut down their operations nationwide if aviation unions again disrupt the operations of any member airline. The warning follows the disruption of airline activities during an industrial action at airports in Lagos and Abuja on August 11. The Airline Operators of Nigeria said the incident caused significant disruption to passengers and airline operations. According to the association, more than 70 Air Peace flights were affected, while more than 30 United Nigeria Airlines flights were also disrupted. The operators said the disruption resulted in cancelled and delayed flights, stranded passengers and additional financial costs for airlines. AON said it would not accept a repeat of the incident and warned that another similar disruption could result in all member airlines suspending operations nationwide. The dispute involves disagreements between aviation unions and airlines over issues including statutory payments and workers’ unionisation rights. The latest warning does not mean Nigerian airlines are currently shutting down operations nationwide. Rather, it is a conditional warning issued by the airline operators in response to any future disruption. The aviation industry has already been dealing with high operating costs, fuel expenses, foreign exchange pressures and infrastructure challenges. Passengers and travel agencies will therefore be watching developments closely, particularly as the possibility of another industrial dispute could affect domestic travel across the country. AON has also called for greater consultation between airlines and authorities over airport infrastructure projects to ensure that changes do not create additional operational problems.
