Nigeria Begins 66th Independence Anniversary Activities With Public Lecture

Nigeria is set to mark its 66th Independence Anniversary with a series of activities beginning with an Independence Day Public Lecture on Wednesday, September 30. The Federal Government has announced a relatively low-key programme for this year’s anniversary as the country prepares to commemorate 66 years since gaining independence from British colonial rule. Nigeria became independent on October 1, 1960. The anniversary programme has included religious services and other preparatory activities leading to the main celebration. The Independence Day Public Lecture is scheduled for September 30, while President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to deliver a nationwide broadcast on October 1. The Federal Government has said the anniversary provides an opportunity to reflect on Nigeria’s journey, the sacrifices of the country’s founding nationalists and the challenges and opportunities facing the nation. The theme for the 2026 anniversary is “From Reforms to Stability: Consolidating Nigeria’s Renewed Hope for Shared Prosperity.” President Tinubu is expected to participate in anniversary activities in Lagos following his return to Nigeria from Europe. The celebrations come at a time when the country is dealing with major economic, security and social issues, while the government continues to implement reforms intended to reshape the economy. For many Nigerians, the anniversary will provide an opportunity to reflect not only on the country’s history but also on the conditions affecting citizens today. The nationwide presidential broadcast on October 1 will provide an opportunity for the administration to outline its message to Nigerians as the country enters another year of independence.
