Nigerian Bankers Plan New Reforms to Push More Support Toward MSMEs

The Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria has announced plans aimed at ensuring that ongoing reforms in the banking sector translate into greater benefits for businesses and households. The initiative comes amid continuing changes in Nigeria’s financial sector, including banking recapitalisation and efforts to strengthen the country’s economic environment. The institute said it is developing initiatives designed to connect developments in the banking sector with the needs of the real economy, particularly micro, small and medium enterprises. One of the measures being planned is the introduction of MSME-focused clinics. The initiative is expected to provide businesses with opportunities to better understand financial services, access to funding and navigate some of the challenges associated with operating in the formal financial system. MSMEs remain a major part of Nigeria’s economy, providing employment and supporting economic activity across different sectors. However, many small businesses continue to face challenges involving access to affordable finance, financial literacy, technology and business development support. The bankers’ institute said the new approach is intended to help ensure that improvements in the financial sector are not limited to the balance sheets of major banks but also translate into broader economic activity. The development comes as Nigerian banks continue to strengthen their financial positions under the sector’s recapitalisation programme. For small business owners, the effectiveness of such initiatives will depend largely on whether they improve access to practical financial support and make banking services more accessible. The Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria says it wants the banking sector to play a stronger role in supporting productive economic activity and helping businesses grow. The planned MSME clinics are therefore expected to form part of a wider effort to connect financial-sector reforms with the everyday needs of businesses and households.
