Atragic flood incident in Anambra State has claimed the life of a pupil of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Primary School after a vehicle carrying schoolchildren was overwhelmed by floodwaters. The incident occurred in the Isiagu area of Awka South Local Government Area following heavy rainfall and flooding. The deceased pupil, identified as Success Ezenwafor, was travelling to school when the school bus conveying the children became trapped in floodwaters and overturned. Nine other occupants of the vehicle, comprising seven schoolchildren and two adults, were rescued alive by police operatives working with residents in the area. The survivors were taken to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku, Awka, for medical attention. Success was reportedly swept away by the floodwaters and remained missing after the incident. His remains were later recovered the following morning. The tragedy has prompted renewed concern over the dangers posed by flooding during periods of heavy rainfall, particularly for children travelling to and from school. Following the incident, the Anambra State Police Command issued a flood alert to parents, guardians and caregivers. The command urged residents to exercise greater caution and take necessary steps to protect children from flood-related dangers. The police also advised parents and guardians to remain vigilant whenever heavy rainfall creates dangerous road and drainage conditions. The incident has again drawn attention to the impact of flooding in communities across Anambra, where heavy rainfall can rapidly transform roads and low-lying areas into dangerous waterways. Authorities have continued to urge residents to avoid attempting to cross flooded roads or waterways when conditions become unsafe. For the family and community of the deceased pupil, the incident has brought grief, while the circumstances have renewed calls for greater vigilance during periods of severe rainfall.
