NIMC Debunks Viral NIN Data-Breach Claim, Urges Nigerians to Ignore Recycled Video

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has moved to calm concerns over a viral social media video claiming that Nigeria’s National Identification Number database had been compromised. NIMC described the claim as false and unfounded, saying the video currently circulating online is based on an old report from 2024 that had already been denied. In a statement issued by its Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, the commission said its National Identity Database had not been breached or compromised. The commission said it maintains multiple layers of security infrastructure to protect the personal information of Nigerians and legal residents registered in the system. NIMC urged members of the public not to rely on unverified social media reports for information concerning the national identity system. The commission also highlighted its recently introduced NIN Authentication, known as NINAuth, which provides web, API and mobile verification services. According to NIMC, the platform is designed to allow people to verify their identities while reducing unnecessary exposure of raw NIN information. The commission said NINAuth requires the explicit consent of the NIN holder before personal data is shared for processes such as Know Your Customer verification. NIMC said the system is also intended to support services including SIM registration, passport and immigration processes, tax filings and financial transactions. The commission urged Nigerians to obtain information about the NIN system directly from its official communication channels and warned against spreading unverified claims capable of creating unnecessary panic. The latest clarification comes as NIN remains a major identity requirement for accessing a wide range of government and private-sector services in Nigeria.
