Security Forces Launch Rescue Operation for Abducted Farmers in Niger State

Security forces have launched an operation to locate and rescue farmers abducted by suspected bandits in Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State. The victims were reportedly taken while working on farms in the area, with most of those affected said to be women. The incident occurred in the Mukura area of Kasuwan-Garba District, with reports indicating that the farmers were harvesting groundnuts when the attackers struck. The Niger State Police Command confirmed the abduction of more than 20 people, while the chairman of Mariga Local Government Area put the number of victims at more than 47. The difference in the figures has made the exact number of people still in captivity unclear. According to the local government chairman, Aliyu Muhamadu, the abducted farmers included mostly women and some men. He also said one of the women reportedly gave birth while in captivity. Security personnel comprising soldiers and police officers have since moved into the forest area as part of efforts to locate the victims. The PUNCH reported that security personnel and local vigilantes had also been mobilised, with an encounter reportedly taking place between security operatives and suspected attackers. The local government chairman further alleged that the abductors had contacted relatives of some victims and were demanding ransom for their release. The reported incident has renewed concerns over the safety of farmers operating in rural communities, particularly during the farming and harvesting seasons. Agricultural workers in several parts of northern Nigeria have faced security challenges in areas where armed groups operate, sometimes making it difficult for farmers to access their farms. Security agencies are now expected to intensify efforts to locate the abducted farmers and secure their release. Authorities have not announced that the victims have been rescued as of the latest reports. The incident has also generated renewed calls for stronger protection of farming communities and rural residents whose livelihoods depend on access to their farms.
