SSANU and NASU Ultimatum Enters Final Phase as Nationwide Strike Looms

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) has moved into the final phase of its 30-day ultimatum to the Federal Government. As of April 16, 2026, the unions remain on high alert following the government’s continued delay in meeting longstanding financial agreements.

The Core Dispute

The impending industrial action centers on the non-payment of four months’ withheld salaries dating back to the 2022 strike period. While the government recently commenced payments for academic staff, SSANU and NASU leaders have condemned the “exclusionary treatment” of non-teaching staff, describing it as a direct violation of their members’ rights.

Key Demands

Beyond the withheld salaries, the unions are demanding immediate action on the following:

2009 Agreement Renegotiation: A final sign-off on the reviewed conditions of service and salary structures.

Earned Allowances: Payment of outstanding arrears owed to staff across federal and state universities.

Funding Gap: Increased budgetary allocation for the general upkeep of university administrative operations.

Countdown to Shutdown

The 30-day ultimatum, which was served to the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Labour, is set to expire on April 30, 2026. Union leaders have already directed branches nationwide to begin “sensitization meetings” to prepare members for a total withdrawal of services.

If a resolution is not reached by the end of the month, administrative offices, bursaries, clinics, and security departments across all Nigerian public universities will be shut down indefinitely.
