NDLEA Uncovers Industrial-Scale Meth Lab in Ebonyi, Arrests Mexican Suspect

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has uncovered and dismantled an industrial-scale methamphetamine laboratory in Ebonyi State, following months of investigation into an alleged transnational drug network operating clandestine laboratories in different parts of Nigeria. The development was disclosed by the NDLEA during a media briefing in Lagos, where the agency also revealed the arrest of a Mexican national, Arturo Carrera Loaiza, who was allegedly attempting to leave Nigeria through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos. According to the agency, the investigation was connected to earlier discoveries of suspected methamphetamine laboratories in Ogun and Oyo states. NDLEA operatives had previously arrested Mexican and Nigerian suspects during operations in Ogun State in May and at a clandestine laboratory in Tapa village, Ibarapa North Local Government Area of Oyo State, in June. Investigators reportedly linked Loaiza to the Oyo operation after one of the Mexican suspects arrested there allegedly identified him as the person who recruited him and brought him into Nigeria. The NDLEA said Loaiza denied involvement in methamphetamine production during interrogation and reportedly claimed that he came to Nigeria for a restaurant business. However, investigators allegedly recovered photographs showing him wearing a laboratory coat and standing near equipment associated with methamphetamine production. According to the agency, forensic analysis of location information contained in the photographs led investigators to a property under construction in Isiata Ugoni Okposi, Ebonyi State. A subsequent operation at the location on August 30 reportedly uncovered suspicious structures, chemical odours and other evidence pointing to possible illicit drug production. The agency also said CCTV footage recovered from the property showed Loaiza and a Nigerian suspect, identified as John Samuel Ivo Okike, allegedly moving chemicals and laboratory equipment from the premises. NDLEA said its operatives later traced the materials to another property in a neighbouring community, where they recovered chemicals and equipment allegedly connected to methamphetamine production. Among the items listed by the agency were acetone, toluene, ethanol, hydrochloric acid, tartaric acid, dehydrators, condensing units, reaction pots, pumps, weighing scales, gas burners and other laboratory equipment. The agency said the operation represents another major breakthrough in its investigation into an alleged international network attempting to establish clandestine drug-production facilities in Nigeria. NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), warned that Nigeria would not be allowed to become a safe haven for international drug cartels. The agency said investigations are continuing as operatives work to identify and apprehend other people allegedly connected to the network, including financiers and collaborators. The Ebonyi discovery comes after similar operations in Ogun and Oyo, highlighting the scale of the NDLEA’s ongoing efforts against clandestine drug laboratories and transnational drug trafficking networks in the country. Authorities have continued to stress the importance of intelligence gathering, forensic investigation and international cooperation in disrupting sophisticated drug networks operating across borders.
