In a direct response to growing student concerns regarding the new accommodation charges, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nwachukwu, met with the leadership of the Clinical Medical students today to clarify the administration’s stance and offer concessions. The meeting, held in the Vice-Chancellor’s conference room, was attended by Principal Officers and the Dean of Student Affairs. It served as a platform for the University to address the friction caused by the ₦300,000 hostel fee recently announced for clinical students. A Focus on Infrastructure and Standards Addressing the "elephant in the room," the VC explained that the fee is a direct reflection of the high cost of maintaining specialized medical housing. He pointed out that the hostel in question isn't a standard dormitory; it is designed to meet the strict specifications of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN). Each room is an en-suite, fully furnished, and restricted to only two students to ensure an environment conducive to the rigorous demands of clinical studies. Prof. Nwachukwu further argued that relying on the national grid (EEDC) has become unsustainable due to its "epileptic and unreliable" nature. To solve this, he announced a ₦50 million solar power project dedicated to the College of Medical Sciences. "The revenue from these fees cannot even cover the cost of gas for generators at current prices," the VC noted. "The shift to solar is the only way to guarantee the uninterrupted power supply these students need for their studies." Fee Reduction and Support Systems While defending the necessity of the costs, the Vice-Chancellor moved to ease the immediate financial pressure on the current cohort. In what he described as a gesture of "compassion and consideration," he announced a ₦10,000 reduction for the ongoing session. Clinical students are now expected to pay ₦290,000. To ensure that no student is left behind due to financial hardship, the VC outlined two major safety nets: Philanthropic Support: Student leaders were tasked with identifying indigent students who truly cannot afford the fees. The VC pledged to link these students with philanthropic individuals ready to provide financial aid. NELFUND Enrollment: The administration urged all students to take advantage of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) to help manage their tuition and accommodation expenses. Student-Centered Governance Throughout the dialogue, Prof. Nwachukwu reiterated that his administration remains "student-centered." He emphasized that while the university is forced to navigate harsh economic realities, the ultimate goal remains providing the best possible facilities for medical training. The meeting concluded with a sense of cautious optimism, as student leaders are expected to relay these developments—and the new ₦290,000 figure—back to their constituents.
