Police Investigate Alleged ₦178 Million Financial Crimes Involving PCRC Chairman

The Nigeria Police Force has commenced steps to investigate allegations of financial crimes amounting to more than ₦178 million involving the National Chairman of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), Alhaji Mogaji Ibrahim Olaniyan, and other national executive officers of the organisation. The development follows a petition submitted to the Inspector-General of Police on July 13, 2026, by the law firm A.F. Obainoke & Co. on behalf of some elected national officers of the PCRC. According to the petition, the allegations concern financial transactions involving more than ₦178 million and were directed against Olaniyan and other national executive officers. The petitioners reportedly stated that they were elected into various national positions within the PCRC in 2022, including the National Auditor, while Olaniyan was elected National Chairman. Following the petition, the office of the Inspector-General of Police reportedly forwarded the matter to the Directorate of Legal Services of the Nigeria Police Force for appropriate action in a letter dated July 20, 2026. The document was subsequently received by the Directorate on July 28. The latest development has brought renewed attention to financial accountability and internal disputes within the PCRC. According to the report, some PCRC members had previously raised questions about the organisation’s finances, including allegations concerning funds generated through registration fees for a 2026 national leadership workshop. There have also been claims that the organisation’s financial records had not undergone a comprehensive audit for several years. The PCRC National Auditor, Usman Garu, was reportedly involved in disagreements with the leadership over efforts to audit accounts dating back to 2022. The latest allegations also come amid disputes surrounding the PCRC’s internal electoral processes. However, the allegations contained in the petition have not been established as proven financial crimes, and the police investigation is expected to determine the facts and circumstances surrounding the claims. The report stated that attempts to reach Olaniyan for his response to the latest allegations were unsuccessful at the time of publication. The PCRC is a community-policing organisation that works in partnership with the Nigeria Police Force. In April 2026, Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu received a PCRC delegation led by Olaniyan and reaffirmed the importance of the partnership between the police and the organisation. As the investigation progresses, attention is expected to remain on whether the allegations will be substantiated and what action, if any, will follow from the police authorities.
