BREAKING: FG Suspends 20 NSCDC Officers Over Deaths of 37 Miners in Custody

The Federal Government has suspended 20 officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, following the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners who were being held in the Corps’ custody in Minna, Niger State. The suspension, which includes the Niger State Commandant of the NSCDC, came as authorities moved to investigate the circumstances surrounding one of the most serious incidents involving detainees in recent times. The Federal Government has also constituted a 10-member independent committee to investigate the deaths and establish what happened to the detainees while they were in custody. Reports surrounding the incident indicate that 65 suspected illegal miners were being held in an overcrowded NSCDC cell, with at least 37 reportedly dying. Survivors have alleged that the detainees experienced severe conditions, including suffocation, although the full circumstances surrounding the deaths are still subject to investigation. The development has generated widespread concern in Niger State, with questions being raised about the circumstances under which the detainees were kept and whether established procedures for the treatment of people in custody were followed. The Federal Government has said the investigation is intended to establish the facts and determine responsibility. The suspension of the officers is therefore part of the measures being taken while the probe continues and should not, by itself, be taken as a final determination of individual responsibility. The deaths have also attracted reactions from political and civil society figures, while Niger State authorities have expressed concern over the incident. The independent panel is expected to examine the circumstances leading to the deaths and make recommendations to the government. The Federal Government has pledged that appropriate action will follow the findings of the investigation.
