How to Apply for the US Army as a Non-Citizen in 2026: Requirements, Green Card & Citizenship Process

Many Nigerians and other foreigners ask if it’s possible to join the United States Armywithout being a U.S. citizen.The short answer is yes, but with conditions. You don’t need to be a U.S. citizen to enlist, but you must be a legal U.S. resident. According to U.S. Army recruiting guidelines, non-citizens must meet these requirements:

1. Have a Green Card- You must be a U.S. Permanent Resident, also called a Legal Permanent Resident, LPR
2. Live in the United States- You cannot apply from Nigeria or any other country
3. Age -18 to 35 years old. Some waivers go up to 42-45 for certain jobs
4. Education High school diploma or GED
5. Language: Speak, read and write English fluently
6. Pass ASVAB, physical, medical and background check.
The U.S. Army does not sponsor visas or recruit directly from outside the country. To qualify, you must first get a Green Card through:
– Family sponsorship
– Employment
– DV Lottery / Green Card Lottery
– Asylum/Refugee status
After filing Form I-485 Application to Register Permanent Residence and paying processing fees of $750 to $1,200, you’ll need to wait until you’re living in the U.S. with your Green Card before visiting a recruiter.
This is why many non-citizens join. Normally a Green Card holder must wait 5 years to apply for U.S. citizenship. But if you serve in the U.S. military for even 1 day during a period of hostilities – which has been in effect since 9/11 – you can apply immediately. How it works:
1. The Army helps you complete Form N-426 Request for Certification of Military Service
2. You file Form N-400 Application for Naturalization with USCIS
3. The application is free for service members
4. Some bases even offer “Naturalization at Basic Training” so you can become a citizen before graduation
Processing usually takes 6 to 8 months. Until you become a U.S. citizen, you will face some limits:
– Cannot reenlist if you don’t get citizenship in your first term
– No security clearance No intelligence, aviation, or sensitive jobs
– No overseas assignments that require clearance
– Limited bonuses and schools until citizenship is approved. Steps on how to apply:
1. Get your Green Card and relocate to the U.S.
2. Visit an Army recruiter at http://recruiting.army.mil with your Green Card, SSN, ID, and diploma
3. Take the ASVAB test and pass MEPS medical screening
4. Enlist and complete Basic Training
5. Apply for citizenship with help from your base’s naturalization office
6. Attend interview + take Oath Receive Certificate of Naturalization
The Army will not help you get a Green Card. You must secure legal permanent residency first. Also, the old MAVNI program for special skills is not active as of 2026.
