Something happened while I was writing my exams last semester.
It was as if my lecturers and exam invigilators all had a problem with time or somewhere very important to be.
Where did they all want to go?
Where were they rushing to? 😭
On the exam paper, the duration would be clearly stated:
2 HOURS.
But somehow, most times, we were asked to submit before the two hours elapsed.
The first day it happened, I was like:
“Oh nooo… I’ve not finished o!” 🥺😂
But the next time I entered the examination hall, I was ready.
I had realised that I couldn’t approach the exam the same way I normally would.
So, as soon as my paper got to me, I started writing.
I didn’t write at my normal pace anymore because, apparently, the timing was no longer normal timing. 😭😂
And somehow, I began to adapt.
Here are 4 lessons my exam experience taught me:
- ADJUSTING IS PART OF GROWTH
Someone who is willing to grow must also be willing to make adjustments.
Sometimes, the goal doesn’t change, but the approach has to.
If what you’re doing isn’t working in your current situation, don’t be afraid to try a different approach. - FOCUS SAVES TIME AND ENHANCES PRODUCTIVITY
Even though there were still some papers I didn’t completely finish, I noticed that I was able to focus better during the exams.
I couldn’t afford to let my mind wander when every minute counted.
And that’s a lesson beyond the examination hall.
When you have a task at hand, focus on the task.
Get it done.
You may be surprised by how much time you save simply by giving one thing your full attention. - DON’T WAIT UNTIL THINGS BECOME DIFFICULT BEFORE YOU LEARN TO ADAPT
The first experience taught me something.
The next time, I came prepared.
Sometimes, our first attempt doesn’t go as planned, but it gives us information we can use to do better the next time.
Learn from what happened.
Don’t just complain about it. - PREPARATION GIVES YOU AN ADVANTAGE
Once I knew what to expect, I wasn’t entering the hall completely unaware anymore.
I adjusted my mindset before the next exam even started.
Preparation may not guarantee that everything will go perfectly, but it puts you in a better position to respond when things don’t go as planned.
