Fresh concerns have emerged over the safety of Nigerians living in South Africa following the deaths of three Nigerian nationals in separate incidents between September 18 and 21, 2026. The Nigerian Consulate-General in Johannesburg confirmed the deaths and called on South African authorities to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding each incident. The three Nigerians were identified as Kenechukwu Christopher Igwemmadú, Olaniyi Olaleye Olatunde and Christian Hillary Nnaemeka. According to Nigerian authorities, Igwemmadú died in Bloemfontein on September 18 in circumstances involving alleged police harassment. Olatunde was shot at a nightclub in Mamelodi East, Pretoria, two days later, while Nnaemeka died in Primrose, Ekurhuleni, on September 21. The consulate said the incidents occurring within such a short period had raised serious concerns about the safety of Nigerians and other foreign nationals in South Africa. The Nigerian government has called for proper investigations and accountability where wrongdoing is established. The latest deaths come amid continuing tensions surrounding the treatment of migrants in South Africa. Nigerians have previously been victims of attacks and other violent incidents linked to anti-migrant sentiment. According to the Associated Press, Nigerian officials said the three latest deaths bring the number of Nigerians killed in South Africa in 2026 to 12, and to 112 since 2022. South African authorities had not immediately responded to requests for comment on the latest allegations at the time of the reports. The Nigerian Consulate said it would continue to monitor developments and engage relevant authorities as investigations proceed. The development has once again placed the safety of Nigerians abroad in the spotlight and is likely to increase pressure for stronger diplomatic engagement between Abuja and Pretoria.
