Expectation vs. Reality on the Frontlines of Student Loans (NELFUND)

NELFUND Expands Reach: 12 More State Universities Cleared for Student Loan Disbursement

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) promised a genuine shift in higher education financing: interest-free coverage of institutional fees paid directly to schools, plus monthly upkeep allowances to help students stay in class. For the 2025/2026 academic session, the Fund has delivered at scale. Billions of naira have been disbursed to institutions including the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology (ADUSTECH), confirming that the policy is no longer theoretical.Yet the experience on campus registration lines tells a more complicated story. While institutional fee payments have generally moved smoothly once verification is complete, many undergraduates continue to face delays in receiving their monthly upkeep stipends. NELFUND has publicly attributed these bottlenecks to network downtime, verification lags, and bank-account validation failures. The process also depends heavily on the administrative speed of individual tertiary institutions, which are expected to verify student lists within a relatively short window (around 15 days in the operational guidelines). When schools move slowly or data mismatches occur — wrong JAMB numbers, unverified matriculation details, or incomplete records — students bear the cost. For an independent body such as the Student Union Government (SUG), the task is not to reject NELFUND but to close the practical gaps. Campus leaders can usefully set up dedicated help desks to assist applicants in resolving data discrepancies and tracking application status. Students need clear, timely communication rather than rumour. NELFUND’s framework is sound and the volumes already disbursed are significant; its long-term success, however, will rest on tightening the digital and administrative links between the Fund, the banks, and university portals so that both fees and upkeep reach beneficiaries more predictably.
